Now you can watch The Farewell with your Chinese grandparents.
In honor of Grandparents Day on Sunday, distributor A24 is releasing a Chinese subtitled version of the film in select cities in the United States.
Director Lulu Wang’s semi-autobiographical The Farewell has captivated audiences since its limited release on July 12 and raked in more than $16 million in the U.S. box office. (A mainland China release is in the works.)
Awkwafina of Crazy Rich Asians fame plays Billi, a stand-in for Wang, as she returns to China with her family under the guise of a wedding to say goodbye to their beloved matriarch, who has been diagnosed with cancer but doesn’t know it.
With dialogue in English and Mandarin Chinese, The Farewell has been lauded for its strong performances from Awkwafina and Zhao Shuzhen, a veteran TV actress who plays Billi’s grandmother.
The original release only ran with English subtitles over the Chinese dialogue, but starting Sunday, you can watch it with additional Chinese subtitles. Bring your nainai.
