Welcome to Ice Country. In this series, we’ll see what winter looks like in some of the coldest parts of China.
Those amazing ice cities you saw in our last episode of “Ice Country”? They need hundreds of thousands of giant ice blocks every winter.
To meet demand, thousands of men, who usually work as farmers or construction workers, move to China’s northeastern cities for months. Here, they become ice cutters, working 12-hour shifts in -20°C (-4°F) temperatures on frozen rivers.
